Each week, we want to take some time to recognize our volunteers who dedicate their time to the Newtown Square Fire Company.

Next up- Preston Tyrell!

Preston originally joined as a member in 1985, took some time off and has been active since 2020. During his years of service, Preston has held many titles including the Ambulance, Ladder & Engine Lieutenant, a Board Member, and Relief Member. He also helps with our IT and historical archives.

Preston says he decided to volunteer because “as a youth, seeing Santa on the Fire trucks. 7 year old logic if I was a fireman, I would get more time with Santa...”

Outside of the fire company, Preston teaches high school business classes at Ridley High School, cheers on his kids Lacrosse teams, and helps live stream their games. He is a Semi Professional Kite Flyer and history buff. He is involved with Scouts BSA, President of Radnor Studio 21, Main line television. He like cameras, Computers and Technology. And the cats, he needs to mention the cats.

When asked about his favorite firehouse memory, Preston said “Favorite firehouse memory?? All of them.... The best I don't think can be made public. People use the term "Family" but here it is really a family. We have been at each other's weddings, child births, funerals, moving in or out, fixing cars, painting houses, fixing toilets. A member set me up on a blind date to my now wife. A another member was my best man at my wedding - and I was his. Two members are god parents to my kids, and I am god parent to members kids as well. I cant think of life mile stone that does not have at least one member in it.”

And to anyone who is considering becoming a volunteer, “Jump in both feet! We wont let you drown, but hold on for the experience of your life. You don't need to fight fires, what can you bring the organization?”

Interested in becoming a volunteer? Fill out an application from our website, send an email to membership@nsfc.org, or just stop by the station for more information!
