| Newtown Square Fire Company members were awakened early this morning at 5:01 AM for a fire alarm in the 3800 block of West Chester Pike. The call was reported as a pull station activation with a fire. Deputy Chief Mike Kenny arrived at the scene and found the building filled with smoke. The lobby reception desk was on fire. Security guards had evacuated the building and reported that everyone was safely out. Engine 41, led by Lieutenant Harper, arrived moments later. Lieutenant Harper and firefighter Jack Robinson entered the building, advanced a hose line, and extinguished the fire. The building’s sprinkler system had activated, which helped prevent the fire from spreading. Firefighters from Broomall, Rose Tree, Media, Berwyn, Radnor, and Milmont Fire Company spent the next two hours performing salvage and overhaul after the sprinkler system activation. They also worked to clear smoke from the large building. Haverford Township Bureau of Fire, Station 56, and Manoa Fire Company served as the Rapid Intervention Team. Maintenance and engineering staff from the facility arrived to reset the fire dampers and reverse the HVAC system to help clear smoke. Pennsylvania State Police troopers were on scene to investigate the cause of the malfunction. Crews cleared the call after a little over two hours. |
