This month for Throw Back Thursday, we are looking at the women who made the fire company part of their lives. The first female member of the Fire Company was Joyce Hayden, who joined in 1961; however, she did not go on a call until almost a year later.

Joyce was a founding member of the newly formed Ambulance Service for Newtown Township. She spearheaded the recruitment and training of new members. Her efforts paved the way for women in the fire service and more importantly, the countless numbers of Newtown Square residents that she has helped over the years.

The inaugural Active female members of Newtown Square Fire COmpany are as picture from left to right, Joyce D Hayden, TBD, Betty Morris, TBD, Jean Johnson, and Peggy Walsh.

Can you help figure out the rest? The other applications we have on record are: Naomi Landis, Amy Marie Swanson, Anne (Mrs. Jarvis) Smith and Pauline L. Ferguson.

The Newtown Square Fire Company has been an important member of this community for the last 108 years thanks to many community members who donated both time as a volunteer and with financial support
